Pleanala decision on Rialto chapel demolition a disgrace

Labour Party TD for Dublin South Central Mary Upton, has described as a disgrace, the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant permission to demolish a late 19th century chapel of social and historical value, to build a private hospital in the grounds of St James's Hospital.

"This decision by An Bord Pleanála came as a shock to myself and local Labour Councillor John Gallagher. We have consistently opposed the demolition of this chapel to allow the construction of a private hospital. We appealed to An Bord Pleanála in response to the decision by Dublin City Council to disregard the views of the local community to approve this scheme after failing to bring the recommendation on the protected status of the chapel before a full meeting of the democratically elected City Councillors.

"This decision however, by An Bord Pleanála to grant such a proposal, clearly demonstrates why the public has lost faith in a planning system that time and again appears to favour the developers and disregard the views of the communities that have to live with the consequences of these decisions.

"The idea of handing over valuable public lands to private investors to build for-profit hospitals is a policy relic from the now defunct Progressive Democrats. It is a failed policy from a failed party that treats people's health as a commodity and was never going to be the solution to the crisis in our health service.

"A shameful precedent has been set where a community's heritage has been deemed inferior to the wishes of private investors to construct a private for-profit hospital on public lands".
